Magellan set sail with 5 ships and about 270 men. The only ship to make it home was the Victoria with 18 men aboard. They were the first men to ever circumnavigate the world. Magellan wasn't among them. He was killed in the Philippines in a battle he started.
Although Magellan didn’t complete his own expedition, he is credited with making it happen. Between the mutiny, the desertion, the storm that sank a ship, the battle, the poisoning of his men by natives, and other incredible details of the 3 year journey, the story of Magellan's expedition is a fascinating story! We honor Magellan and all his men for their courage and sacrifice.
